Bernice H. Rosendahl, 73, of Columbus Nebraska died Thursday, July 17, 2003 at her home in Columbus.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, July 21, 2003, 10:00 A.M. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 14 miles North with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 20 from 3:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and on Monday, July 21 from 9:00 - 10:00 A.M. at the church with a family prayer service at 9:45 A.M.

Bernice H. Rosendahl was born in rural Creston, Nebraska to Adolph and Elvira (Osten) Kapels on February 7, 1930. She was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church (14 miles north), rural Columbus, Nebraska on March 9, 1930. Bernice re-affirmed her Baptism through confirmation on April 18, 1943 at St. John's Lutheran Church. She received her education at St. John's Lutheran School.
Bernice and Roland Rosendahl were united in marriage on February 2, 1949, at St. John's Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker and a business partner with her husband. They lived on a farm near Creston before moving to Columbus in 1998. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, walking, and her grandchildren. She was a very active member of the church where she was a member of the Women's Missionary League and the church choir.

JOHANNES--Mrs. Maria Johannes, widow of Henry Johannes, died Wednesday afternoon at five o'clock at her home fourteen miles northeast of this city, after an illness of three weeks which resulted in a severe type of typhoid fever. The funeral will be held this forenoon at eleven o'clock at the German Lutheran church in Bismark township, Pastor Frese conducting the service. Mrs. Johannes was in her sixty-eighth year. She was born at Oldenburg, Germany, October 16, 1837. In February, 1862, she was married to Henry Johannes, and together they came to America in 1867. For many years they resided in this county. Mr. Johannes died in 1898. The bereaved family consists of eight children, all of whom reside in this vicinity. COLUMBUS -- Alvina L. Groteluschen, 95, died Friday, July 21, 1995, at Columbus Manor.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Chapel in Columbus with the Rev. Douglas R. Zurek officiating. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation is 2-9 p.m. Monday and 8:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, with a 10:15 a.m. family prayer service, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Groteluschen was born July 1, 1900, in rural Leigh to Johann H. and Bertha (Lusche) Muhle. She attended school in Leigh.

She married Douglas Groteluschen Jan. 2, 1923, at Shell Creek Lutheran Church and moved to Columbus in 1938.

She worked at Dale Electronics Inc. and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two sons, Marion of St. Paul and Douglas of Lincoln; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one brother, Elmer Muhle of Schuyler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, seven brothers and two sisters.

at the Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville, Kan.

Cemetery.

Mrs. Loseke was born May 24, 1916, in Platte Center to Edward and Mathilda
(Petersen) Arndt. She graduated from Platte Center High School.

She married Albert C. Loseke on Oct. 10, 1935, in Platte Center. She then
became a member of Christ Lutheran Church.

She was very active at the church. She was a Sunday School teacher, member
of the choir, past president of the Ladies Aid and the LWML, coordinator of
the prayer chain and she worked on quilts for World Relief.

She was a lifelong resident of Platte County. She was also in the charter
LPN class at Platte College. After receiving her license, she worked at the
Columbus Community Hospital from 1969 to 1979 as an LPN. She enjoyed sewing
and gardening.

Survivors include three daughters, Naomi (Orval) Baker of Springfield, Ore.,
Dianne (Erwin) Fink of Herkimer, Kan and Stephanie (John) Kelling of
Waukesha, Wis.; one son, Bradford (Mary) Loseke of Beaverton, Ore.; one
daughter-in-law, Linda (Gene) Loseke-Cattau of Columbus; two sisters-in-law,
Barbara Arndt of Platte Center, Luella Arndt of Columbus and Edna Loseke of
Columbus; 19 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Stuart
Loseke; an infant son; one sister, Leona Buss and four brothers, Walter

Colorado. They lived in Loveland, Colorado for 20 years and moved to
Columbus in 1971. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and a
homemaker.

Lifetime resident of Columbus and vicinity, Mr. Lusche was born May 14, 1892 in Platte County. His parents were George and Cahterine (Distler) Lusche.

He married Martha Schreiber Sept. 8, 1915 at St. John Lutheran Church, Shell Creek, and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 196

A retired farmer, Mr. Lusche was associated with Gass-Haney Funeral Home for many years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and former member of the Farmers Union.

He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Carroll, killed in World War II, Nov. 2, 1943 in the Pacific; and one brother, Emil.

in Rochester, Minnesota while visiting family.

Services are Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist
Church in Columbus with Rev. Bill Ritter officiating. Interment is at the
Columbus Cemetery.

Visitation is Monday, July 7 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney

Don Barr was born on February 27, 1942 to George M. & Yvonne (Roberts) Barr
in Norfolk, Nebraska. He graduated from Leigh, Nebraska High School in 1960.

On November 18, 1961, he married Jane Olson at Zion Lutheran Church in
Leigh. He farmed the family farm in Leigh until 1963. At that time, they
moved to Storm Lake, Iowa where he was a manager for Colombian Feed. In
1968, they moved to Fremont, Nebraska where Don was self-employed as a truck
driver for MTR and Eckley Trucking Firm.

In 1974, they moved to Columbus where he was employed as General
Transportation Manager for Lindsay Manufacturing and was involved with the
Nebraska Motor Carriers Association. In 1995, he started his own Freight
Brokerage business. He retired in 2001.

Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Columbus. He
enjoyed spending time with his family. He adored his grandchildren and loved
being with them and watching their activities.

Ruth M. Wilke was born February 20, 1905 in Lyons, Nebraska to Rev. J. Paul
and Marie (Ruhland) Kuehnert. At the age of 13, the family moved to rural
Columbus where her father was a minister at Christ Lutheran Church. She
attended District 15 grade school and graduated from Columbus High School.

She married Gottlieb Wilke on September 16, 1925 at Christ Lutheran Church
with her father presiding. They made their home in the Christ Lutheran area.
She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She was a lifelong member of Christ
Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Christ Lutheran Ladies Aid and a
member of LWML.

Mrs. Reininger was born June 20, 1911, in rural Howells to Emil and Augusta (Christ) Blecha. She attended rural Stanton County schools and Clarkson High School. She was employed for two years at Concordia College in Seward.

She married George Reininger Jr. on April 27, 1937, in rural Howells. After marriage, they farmed south of Leigh. Her husband died in May 1977, and she continued to live on the farm to the present time.

She had been a 4-H leader, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School superintendent for many years. She was very active in the Lutheran Church Women, was a member of the Leigh Garden Club, Sunnyside Club and the Jolly Wilsonettes Neighborhood Club. She loved to garden.

Survivors include one daughter, Ruby Reininger of Leigh; two sons, David (Kay) Reininger and Roger (Dyanna) Reininger, all of Leigh; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Harold Blecha of Olympia, Wash.; and one sister, Pearl (Leonard) Asche of Omaha.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one sister, Orvilla (Herman) Marohn; four brothers, Emil Blecha Jr., Leonard Blecha, DeLaine Blecha and Robert Blecha.

Harold was born September 9, 1904 in Humphrey, Nebraska to Fred and Lena (Friedrich) Schwarz. He attended rural district grade school and Trinity Lutheran parochial school in Madison, Nebraska. After school, Harold worked on the family farm. He married Lorna Loseke on June 4, 1938 in Parker, South Dakota. Together they farmed in the Humphrey area from 1938 to 1946. They then purchased a farm north of Columbus, Nebraska where they raised grain and livestock. They farmed there until 1968 when they moved to Columbus. He worked at Wilke Landscape Center in Columbus from 1970 to 1981. He was a member of various farm coop's.

Harold was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in rural Platte County where he was a past member of the Walther League, an usher and a trustee. Harold was one of three that planted the blue spruce trees along the property line on the north side of the church and the teachers home. He enjoyed playing cards, manicuring his lawn, reading, traveling, listening to music and doing craft work.

Edna Loseke was born on January 20, 1912, in Platte Center, Nebraska, to Carsten and Alvina (Hoefelman) Petersen. She was baptized, confirmed, and attended Zion Lutheran Church and School (west of Platte Center), graduating from Platte Center High School. On December 4, 1935, Edna married Harold M. Loseke at Zion Lutheran Church. They moved to a farm north of Columbus where they lived for 58 years. She was an active member of Christ Lutheran Church, and was the oldest member of the congregation at the time of her death. Edna served as the congregational secretary for 25 years, held offices in Ladies Aid, and was a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League serving on the Nebraska Executive Board for the North District for eight years. She also taught Sunday School, and was active in the Altar Guild and the Lutheran Laymen's League. Edna enjoyed gardening, sewing, the outdoors, and spending time with her family.

LEIGH - Raymond M. Bakenhus, 72, of Leigh died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Beverly Health care Center in Columbus.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at Christ Lutheran Church in rural Columbus with the Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt officiating. Burial will be at Leigh City Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Sucha Post 302.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday at Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. There will be a Family Prayer Service at 10:15 a.m. Friday at the church.

Mr. Bakenhus was born April 19, 1929, in Platte County to William F. and Frieda (Korte) Bakenhus. He grew up on the family farm and attended Christ Lutheran School. He entered the U. S. Army on Feb. 12, 1952, and was involved in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as a corporal on Feb. 14, 1954. He returned to the Leigh area and continued to farm.

He married Patricia Busse on April 20, 1950, in Leigh.

He was an active member of the American Legion in Leigh and the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clarkson. He also enjoyed playing cards. He was on the Board of Directors for the Farm Credit Services for 18 years.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Sue (Dave) Remter of Norfolk and Shelley (Arthur) Schreiber of Leigh; five grandchildren; two sisters, Alice Lake of Leigh and Eunice (Bob) Postma of Columbus; two brothers, Marvin (Hilda) Bakenhus and Arlo Bakenhus, both of Columbus; and one sister-in-law, Gerry Bakenhus of California.

Elsa L. Otte on November 16, 1941 at Christ Lutheran Church. Werner was a
lifelong Platte County dairy farmer, a member of Christ Lutheran Church
where he held numerous offices over the years and he had also served on the
the Sherman Township Board. For the past fifteen years, he and Elsa made their
winter home in Arizona. Memorials are suggested to Christ Lutheran Student
Aid Fund or Concordia University, Irvine, CA.

He attended grade school at District # 2, and graduated from Kramer High School in 1944. Lawrence married Marion Ahrens on September 4, 1949 at St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. He farmed his entire life northeast of Columbus. He was president of the Bismark Township Board, treasurer of the Calvary Cemetery Board, and president of Followers of Christ at St. John's. Lawrence was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, playing cards and gardening.

He farmed his entire life northeast of Columbus. He was president of the Bismark Township Board, treasurer of the Calvary Cemetery Board, and president of Followers of Christ at St. John's. Lawrence was a lifetime member of St. John's Lutheran Church Shell Creek. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, playing cards and gardening.

Sylvia Olson, the last survivor of 13 children, was born Dec. 27, 1915, in Leigh to John and Emma (Stejskal) Barta, who came to America from Czechoslovakia. Sylvia married her high school sweetheart, Arnold (A.T.) Olson, on Jan. 2, 1936, in Columbus. Sylvia was right by A.T.’s side helping with farming. To this marriage, five children were born -- Arnie Jr., Betty, Jane, Linda and Richard John, who died in infancy. They lived on the family farm in rural Leigh until moving to Columbus in 1996.

Sylvia devoted her time and interest to her family and to her home. She had a love of flowers and her garden reflected the care she spent upon it. She was a good neighbor and a loyal friend. She had a special talent as a caregiver and a seamstress. Sylvia enjoyed baking, playing bingo, knitting and crocheting quilts for all her children and grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her special smile.

Sylvia was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the P.T.A. of Leigh Public School, Merry Farmerettes Extension Club and the Ladies Aid at church.

Sylvia is survived by daughters, Betty Hamernik of Columbus, Jane Barr of Columbus, and Linda (Don) Fuhr of Osceola; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Elsie Barjenbruch of Columbus.

Mr. Frese was born Sept. 6, 1910, in Platte County to Adolph and Josephine (Loseke) Frese. He married Velma Grotelueschen on March 1, 1936. He farmed north of Columbus for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Leland (Jeanette) Frese of Cupertino, Calif., and Paul (Rachel) Frese of Lombard, Ill.; one daughter, Rachel (Larry) Holle of Bozeman; one sister, Georgia (Art) Wilke of Osmond; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gerhard Frese and Lloyd Frese; and three sisters, Alice Frese, Dora Frese and Bernice Stevenson.

COLUMBUS - Heino Siefken, 91, of Columbus, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

The funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 14 miles north, with the Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be at the parish cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard, Pieper Post No. 306.

Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continues on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 a.m., also at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran School.

Heino was born Oct. 22, 1915, on a farm south west of Leigh, to Fred and Louise Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Rosche) Siefken. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church on Nov. 23, 1915. On March 24, 1929, Heino reaffirmed his Christian faith through confirmation at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He also attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School. Heino worked on the family grain and dairy farm with his father and would deliver the milk to the neighbors.

Heino joined the United States Army on May 18, 1942, and was honorably discharged because of medical reasons on July 28, 1943.


He married Esther Kapels on Oct. 24, 1943, at St. John's Lutheran Church. They moved to Wayne, where they farmed for a couple of years. In 1945 they moved back to the Columbus area, where they continued farming until retirement. For many years Heino sold Hoegemeyer Seed.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as secretary and trustee for several years. He was a charter member of the St. John's Lutheran Laymen League and a member of the American Legion Pieper Post No. 306 in Creston. Heino enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and welding.

Survivors include sons, Merlin (Nancy) Siefken of West Des Moines, Iowa, Harlen Siefken of Homosassa, Fla., Fred (Kathy) Siefken of Columbus; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Johnson of Lincoln; grandchildren, Steven (Krista) Siefken of Joliet, Ill., Shiela (Darby) Cain of Lincoln, Robin (Kevin) Lowman of Aurora, Colo., Jessica (Wes) Caddell of Freeport, Ill., Craig (Jennifer) Siefken of Lakeville, Minn., Ryan Siefken of Fremont, Heather (Eric) Hiner of St. Louis, Mo., Erin Siefken of Lincoln; 11 great-grandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Arnold (Lois) Siefken of Wayne, Emil (Betty) Siefken of Fort Collins, Colo.; sisters, Elna (Elmer) Janssen of Columbus, Lillian (Norbert) Wieting of Delmont, S.D.; sister-in-law, Helen Siefken of Norfolk.

Mrs. Ehlers was born Nov. 5, 1904, to Henry and Elizabeth (Wiebold) Callies near Kearney. Her family moved to a farm west of Leigh the following year. She attended Leigh Public School District 39 and graduated from Leigh High School in 1922. She attended Wayne State College for two years. She taught for five years near Howells, in Nickerson, southwest of Leigh and in Creston.

She married John Ehlers Feb. 21, 1928, in Madison. They lived near Madison and then moved to rural Leigh.

She was a member of the church. She enjoyed baking, embroidery, crocheting, garden work and flowers.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathleen Ehlers of Leigh; one sister, Lola (Ewald) Hake of Leigh; and one sister-in-law, Ruth Callies of Leigh.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oct. 31, 1993; four brothers, Benjamin, Heinie, Daniel and Edwin Callies; and three sisters, Lydia Parr, Elsie Jull and Helen Dasenbrock.

two years. She worked in the Rynearson bakery in Leigh until she married. She
married Elmer Wurdeman, July 16, 1935 at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh, the
same church where she was baptized and confirmed.

After her marriage, she worked for 15 years in her father's hardware and
furniture store, Hespe Hardware in Leigh. She also worked and co-owned B&W
Manufacturing, Co. of Columbus, a family owned business, since 1958.

She resided in Leigh all her married life, moving to Columbus in 1982. She
was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh and currently a member
of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus.

During her life she was active in Walther League, Sewing Circle, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Zion choir in Leigh. In Columbus, she was an active volunteer of the Columbus Hospital Auxiliary.

poultry and sheep raising and cutting firewood.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Allen Dicke, Dale (Judy) Dicke and
Paul (Diane) Dicke, all of Creston; one daughter, Ruth (Robert) Brichacek of
Columbus; two brothers, Leonard (Katherine) Dicke of Columbus and David

Olga married Oswald Engelbart on Sept. 22, 1936, in Madison. In March of 1942, they moved to a farm west of Leigh, where she would reside for 62 years. After breaking her hip, she spent her last 17 months at the Colonial Manor in Clarkson.

Olga experienced many ups and downs in her life as both a homemaker and farmer. For 12 years she cared for her father-in-law and her elderly mother. Olga's family and friends benefited from two of her personal interests, cooking and craftwork. Olga always enjoyed and appreciated the friendship, warmth, and help of her friends and family.

Survivors include one son, Guy Engelbart of Roy, Wash.; one daughter, Shirley Jones of England; seven grandchildren, Karl Engelbart, Kevin Engelbart, Rolfe Jones, Danielle Feith, Samantha Engelbart Clark, Ted Engelbart and Natalie Engelbart; and three great-grandchildren, Cameron Clark, Caden Clark and Alexander Engelbart.

Allen C. Ahrens, 87, of Columbus, Nebraska died Wednesday, March 8, 2006 at the Beverly Healthcare in Columbus.

Interment will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery rural Columbus with military honors by The American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Allen Carl Ahrens was born September 8, 1918 in rural Platte County, Nebraska to Edwin and Emma (Mueller) Ahrens. He was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church, north of Columbus. Allen attended school at Christ Lutheran and later in life attained his G.E.D. Allen married Louise Marty on November 1, 1939 in Lincoln, Nebraska. On March 31, 1944, Allen entered the U.S. Navy where he served for two years on a destroyer in the Pacific. He was honorably discharged on December 29, 1945.

Allen delivered bulk petroleum, operated several service stations, and was an inspector for the State Department of Motor Vehicles. After his retirement, Allen worked for Ernst Auto Center in his "dream job", delivering new cars to dealers and buyers throughout the Midwest for 20 years. Allen was a long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He served as an elder, Sunday School teacher, and chairman of the congregation. Allen was very active in the Lutheran Layman's League serving as President of the Nebraska District for several years. He also served a term on the Board of Directors of the Nebraska District of the LCMS.

COEUR de ALENE, Idaho -- Sara Reichmuth, 49, of Coeur de Alene, Idaho, died Monday, March 2, 2009, in Idaho following a battle with cancer.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Leigh. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Leigh. Lunch will be served at the church.

Visitation will be 5-7:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Sara was born Nov. 8, 1959, in Columbus to Richard and Lorie (Hollatz) Reichmuth. After graduating from Leigh High School, she attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln where she received her master’s degree in speech pathology. Sara was a professor at Arkansas State University for a time, but spent most of her time working as a speech pathologist in many schools throughout the nation including Clay Center, Harvard, Howells and the Mitchell/Scottsbluff area in Nebraska as well as two years in Yampa, Colo., and the surrounding area. She then moved to Coeur de Alene where she planned on starting her own practice. She was baptized and received her first communion as well as confirmation at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Leigh.

Sara is survived by her parents, Richard and Lorie Reichmuth of Leigh; one sister, Julie Degner of Fort Collins, Colo.; four brothers, Jeff (Geri) Reichmuth of Broomfield, Colo., Tim, Tom and his wife Lisa, and Pete Reichmuth, all of Leigh; and many nieces and nephews.

Hugo H. Lueschen, 66, Creston farmer, died Sunday at home. His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Leigh, preceded by a 10 a.m. family prayer service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will lie in state after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Gass-Haney Funeral Chapel and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Lifetime Platte County resident, he was born at Creston Dec. 22, 1911, to J. Herman and E. Amalie (Cattau) Lueschen. He attended District 46 school and later served many years on that school board. He also served on the County School Reorganization Board; on several township boards; was ASCS committeeman for many years and a member of Farmers Unio

Baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, he was a lifelong member, serving on the church council and many years as Sunday School superintendent.

On Aug. 27, 1942 he married Clara Lutjelusche at St. John Lutheran Church, Shell Creek, and she survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Dale (Sharon) Ternus of Genoa; two sons, Larry of Columbus, Elden of Creston; brother, Art of St. Francis, Kans.; two sisters, Mrs. Julius (Lucy) Hollman of Columbus, Mrs. Walter (Florence) Feye of Creston; five grandchildren, Brian, Lisa and Brad Ternus, Kevin and Kristel Lueschen.
