Darrel L. Baldwin, 86, of Columbus, Nebraska died Saturday, May 14, 2005 at the Columbus Community Hospital.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 at 10:00 A.M. at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus with Rev. Andrew Alberts officiating. Interment will be in the Columbus Cemetery with military honors by The American Legion Honor Guard, Hartman Post 84. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4:00 - 8:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Wednesday from 9:00 - 10:00 AM at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday at 9:45 AM also at the church. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, American Legion Hartman Post 84, or Immanuel Lutheran Church & School.
Darrel Baldwin was born January 27, 1919 in Oconto, Nebraska to John and Pearl (Luther) Baldwin. He graduated from Kearney High School in 1937. Darrel married Eleanor Wurdeman on October 15, 1942 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He entered the United States Army/Air Corp in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946. He served as a tail gunner on a B-24 and was stationed in Moratai. In 1953, Darrel went to work for Lohr Petroleum in downtown Columbus. He retired from Lohr's in 1995. Darrel had volunteered on the Columbus Volunteer Fire Department.
Darrel was a past Boy Scout Leader in Troop 276, a life member of the American Legion where he served as the commander in 1976. He spent many Memorial Days decorating the military graves in the area with American flags. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church where he served as asst. treasurer, elder, numerous boards, and a member of the Lutheran Layman's League. He was a Columbus City Councilman from 1978 - 1986. Darrel was an avid hunter and bowler.
