      From THE COLUMBUS (NE.) TELEGRAM, September 2, 2008-

      LEIGH -- Merle D. Hogendorn, 89, of Leigh, died Saturday, Aug. 30, 2008, at Golden Living Center in Clarkson.

      Funeral services are 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh with the Rev. Terry Timm officiating. Committal is in Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Leigh. Lunch is at the church school.

      Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Leigh Memorial Funeral Chapel in Leigh.

      Merle was born Jan. 31, 1919, on the family farm north of Leigh, to John and Elsie (Glandt) Hogendorn. He attended school at Glandt School District #31 in Stanton County.

      On June 23, 1941, Merle entered the United States Army and served until his Honorable Discharge Oct. 26, 1945, attaining the rank of Tech Sgt. He served 18 months on Attu Island in the Aleutian Island Chain. On April 8, 1947, he married Elvira (Ellie) Asche at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh with the Rev. E.C. Werner officiating.

      Merle farmed and once worked at a flour mill in Omaha. He loved sports, especially playing baseball, softball and watching soccer. He was one of the best catchers in the Leigh area. Merle joined Zion Lutheran Church in March of 1947 and was a member of Sucha Post #302 of the American Legion in Leigh.

      He is survived by his loving wife, Ellie of Leigh; two sisters, Della Pont of Little Falls, Minn. and Arlene and her husband, Ed Hradec of Clarkson; four brothers, John and his wife, Marcella Hogendorn of Sartell, Minn., Paul Hogendorn of Fargo, N.D., Eugene and his wife, Marilyn Hogendorn of Engelwood, Colo. and Donald and his wife, Karen Hogendorn of Norfolk.

      He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Hazel; two brothers, Harold and infant Charles; a sister-in-law, Jane Hogendorn and brother-in-law, Vernon Pont.

      Memorials can be made to Zion Lutheran Church.
