SCRIBNER - Walter J. H. Backhus, 88, of Scribner, died Friday, Oct. 4, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Health Center in Scribner.
Services are 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Scribner with the Rev. Bruce Schut officiating. Burial will be at the Scribner Cemetery.
Visitation is 3-9 p.m. today at the Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner.
Mr. Backhus was born on Jan. 31, 1914, in Creston to John and Anna (Wurdeman) Backhus. He attended St. John's Parochial School in rural Creston. He moved from Creston to Scribner in 1936 and has lived in the Scribner area since. He farmed in the Scribner area for most of his life. He was on a farm southwest of Scribner before moving into Scribner in 1978. He retired in 1980. He lived at the Good Samaritan Health Center since August of 2000.
He married Norma Woerth on Jan. 31, 1940, at Scribner.
He was a member of the church and was active in the Lutheran Layman's League. He also served on the District 24 School Board.
Survivors include his wife; six sons, Richard (Ruth) Backhus, Kenneth (Mary) Backhus, both of Omaha, Robert (Anita) Backhus of Effingham, Ill., Charles (Marilou) Backhus of Ocala, Fla., John (Linda) Backhus of Newport News, Va., and Daniel (Sue) Backhus of Wingate, N.C.; two daughters, Mary Ann (Merle) Muller of Omaha, and Janice (Ron) Von Seggern of Columbus; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Margaret Backhus, Viola Mauch and Ruth Rink; and two brothers-in-law, Oscar Mauch and Roland Rink.
Memorials may be directed to the church or the Good Samaritan Health Center in Scribner.
