Elmer was educated in the District 78 School and Zion Lutheran School. He resided in California for about ten years. He was a farmer, worked for Hartl's Construction as a "cat skinner", adozer operator and also worked at Behlen Manufacturing Co. in Columbus, NE.
Bill Ehlers writes-
My Father, Art Ehlers, and Elmer became the best of friends in their later years. Together with Bruno Zuerlein, they did all kinds of things together. They liked to drive around the countryside, go to the horse races at Grand Island and Columbus, and just hang around together. They were seemingly inseparable. Stepdaughter, Diane Kafka, said they were "like glue". When Elmer died, my father was quite heartbroken.
