      From THE COLUMBUS (NE.) TELEGRAM, September 2, 2008-

      LEIGH -- Lilas M. Kumpf, 75, of Leigh, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 2008, at her home.

      Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh with the Rev. Terry Timm officiating. Committal will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Leigh. Lunch is at the church school.

      Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Leigh Memorial Chapel in Leigh.

      Lilas was born March 14, 1933, in Leigh to Edward and Leona Mae (Linn) Franzen. She graduated Salutatorian of her class at Leigh High School. On June 9, 1953, she married Clarence C. Kumpf at Zion Lutheran Church in Leigh. She worked at the Zion Lutheran School as a cook, the Leigh World, and was a teller and loan officer at the Bank of Leigh for 36 years.

      Lilas was very community minded having served on the church choir for 61 years, Treasurer of Zion Lutheran, member and officer of Zion Ladies Circle and Leigh Woman’s Club, Zion Women's Club, founder of the Keynoters singing group of Leigh, Officer of the Nebraska Association of Banking Women, Maple Creek Concerned Citizens, Leigh Saddle Club, Leigh Community Improvement Group, Treasurer of the L&S Housing Corporation and Treasurer of the Leigh Community Foundation. She also was a founder of Leigh Wood Products and a member of the Legion Auxiliary Sucha Post #302 of Leigh. Lilas was the recipient of the Woody S. Woodward Award for her commitment to the Leigh community.

      She is survived by her husband, Clarence; one son, Dale and his wife, Sharon Kumpf, all of Leigh; one daughter, Susan and her husband, Richard Eikmeier of Dodge; three brothers, Myron and his wife, Bev Franzen of Columbus, Donald and his wife, Lylus Franzen of Central City and Lawrence and his wife, Myrna Rae Franzen of Leigh; one sister, Janet and her husband, Darrell Kruse of Millard; and five grandchildren, Travis, Cory and Ryan Kumpf, Dana and Haley Eikmeier.

      She was preceded in death by her parents.

      Memorials are to the family’s choice.
