WARD MOURNS DEATH OF STAN CYHEL
Last Year's Star Athlete Meets Accidental Death
Teammate at Creighton Discharges Pistol Which Leads To His Death
FUNERAL HELD FRIDAY
Celebrant, Father Grudzinski; Sermon by Father Degleman of Creighton University

Funeral services were held last Friday, November 15, at St. Joseph's Church for 17-year-old Stanley Cyhel, for four years a star athlete at Ward, and a member of last year's graduating class.
Stanley was fatally wounded when a teammate on the Creighton University football team accidentally discharged a pistol, the bullet striking the 17-year-old above the right temple, which presently led to his death. At the time of the accident Stan was enrolled at the medical college of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska, and was also an end on the freshman football team.?
Although a great athlete at Ward, he never once neglected his studies nor spiritual duties as shown by the fact that Stan attended Mass and received Holy Communion on the morning of his death. The sad news reached his relatives and friends last Monday, November 11, and came as a great shock to all those who loved and admired him.
Early Sports Career
The career of Stanley Cyhel was an unusually active one. He was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and attended St. Joseph's Parochial School for eight years, playing two years of grade school basketball. In 1936 he entered Ward with hopes of following in the footsteps of his brother, Walt, who was already beginning to make a name for himself in athletics.
That year Stan reported for football, and although he was only a freshman, Coach Tom Dorney saw in this big handsome youth, a coming star. In his sophomore year, he continued to play football, basketball, and track, besides joining the Eucharistic committee for the second straight year. But it was not until his junior year that Stan reached the climax of his brilliant career at Ward. He earned letters in three different sports, helped make the Eucharistic committee the most active of the year, and was also admitted to the Student Spiritual Council. That same year at the sophomores' Sodality project, he and several other teammates on the basketball squad demonstrated how the sport is played on Strawberry Hill and also on the grounds of West height Manor. This sense of humor on the part of Stan, besides his ever smiling face soon made him one of the most popular boys in school, known to all, the upper classmen and freshmen as well.
On All-City Teams
Entering his senior year, after already having made a name for himself, Stan now now set out to end his athletic career at Ward in a blaze of glory. The sports writers and coaches unanimously picked him as all-city tackle in football and all-city guard in basketball, besides naming him as the highest scorer among all basketball players of Kansas City.
Last year he graduated with the largest class in the school's history and this year he decided to study for a medical profession at Creighton University. However, God willed that Stan should begin his heavenly career, for as Father Degleman in his funeral oration said, "In a short span of time he has fulfilled a long space."[ColfaxDeutschlandPlatte.FBK.FTW]
