John Arthur Scheffler, the son of Arthur and Amelia (Walters) Scheffler was born on November 14, 1938, at the farm home of his parents in Creston, Nebraska. He was baptized in 1952 and was a member of the Creston Baptist Church. He attended elementary school in Creston, and graduated from Creston High School in 1956. After high school, he joined the Navy and later received a medical discharge. In 1957, upon the death of his father, he took over the family farm where he continued to farm until his death. Mr. Scheffler married Nancy Dasenbrock on August 21, 1960 at St. Johns Lutheran Church in Leigh, NE.
Mr. Scheffler was known for his laugh that rolled from his belly. He loved to laugh and play practical jokes on his friends and family. He was a man who believed that those who lived in a community had a vested interest in its success. He was a man who didnt talk about what should be done, but did it! Leading by example, he was a founding member of the Creston Rescue Unit from 1971 - present. He had the distinction of being the last remaining charter member to still actively serve on the unit. He was the clerk of the Creston Township as well as a trustee of the Creston Baptist Church for many years. He was a member of the Creston Fairview Cemetery Board and volunteered his time throughout the community moving snow, mowing, and offering a helping hand to anyone who needed him. His efforts to help others did not go un-noticed in 1993 when he was awarded the Helping Hand Award from the Creston Community Club. In 1994 he was also awarded the Knights of Aksarben's Good Neighbor Citation.
Mr. Scheffler may have been best known as the man behind Crestons annual July 4th fireworks celebration that started in the Schefflers backyard as a get-together of family and friends. Through the years the celebration blossomed into one that was shared with the entire town and the surrounding area. Mr. Schefflers efforts as a licensed pyro-technician annually brought "o-o-o-os" and "ah-h-h-hs" from generations of people with his annual fireworks display that was done with the help of family and friends.
Mr. Scheffler was an avid gardener, finding pleasure in sharing the fruits of his labor with family and friends. He was a walker, rarely missing his daily walks on the surrounding country roads. He was a mechanic, keeping his own machinery and automobiles as well as those of family and friends in working order. Mr. Scheffler was well known for his ability to play the accordion, or "squeeze box" as he called it, by ear. In recent years, he has enjoyed spending the winters in Yuma, AZ with his wife and close friends, where he played the accordion in the Sunday Night Jam Sessions. The Creston community will miss a man who put others before himself. Mr. Scheffler was a pillar of the community who did what he said he would while expecting nothing in return.
