Lena went to the local public school and attended Christ Lutheran German School for her confirmation instruction. Her parents kept as many as seventy-five children at their house in the cold winter months.
Lena enjoyed life and people and she was never boring. Her trademarks were hearty laughs and friendly smiles. Her life was characterized by a strong Christian faith to which she often bore witness to friends and family. She loved to sing the Lutheran Chorales and her favorite gospel songs.
Lena was a wonderful artist and drew many pictures of horses and dogs. Her family thought she could have been another "Grandma Moses". She would write poetry for self-enjoyment and also like to whittle wood; a specialty being whistles.
The local school district #48 had a debate group and initiated teams. Lena was a member of a team and really enjoyed entering the debates.
She was proud of her German heritage and subscribed to a German newspaper which she read thoroughly. She talked in German when her grandchildren were around so they could not understand what she was saying to their parents. She maintained good communication with her relatives in Germany and sent many CARE packages to them during and after WW II. She would tuck notes in the pockets and linings of clothes that she sent to them.
Lena loved the outdoors and gardening. Her specialty was petunias and strawberries. She ate a lot of chokecherries, including the stones, because she said "they keep things rolling".
Lena enjoyed her large family. She loved to play games with her grandchildren. She took them on nature walks, worked jigsaw puzzles with them, and read books to them. HEIDI was her favorite book.
