    From THE COLUMBUS (NE.) TELEGRAM, March 17, 2007-

    COLUMBUS - Heino Siefken, 91, of Columbus, died Tuesday, March 13, 2007, at the Columbus Community Hospital.

    The funeral service will be on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 14 miles north, with the Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be at the parish cemetery. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Honor Guard, Pieper Post No. 306.

    Visitation will be today from 4-8 p.m. at Gass Haney Funeral Home and continues on Saturday from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday at 10:15 a.m., also at the church.

    Memorials may be directed to the St. John's Lutheran School.

    Heino was born Oct. 22, 1915, on a farm south west of Leigh, to Fred and Louise Wilhelmina “Minnie” (Rosche) Siefken. He was baptized at Christ Lutheran Church on Nov. 23, 1915. On March 24, 1929, Heino reaffirmed his Christian faith through confirmation at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Columbus. He also attended Immanuel Lutheran Grade School. Heino worked on the family grain and dairy farm with his father and would deliver the milk to the neighbors.

    Heino joined the United States Army on May 18, 1942, and was honorably discharged because of medical reasons on July 28, 1943.


    He married Esther Kapels on Oct. 24, 1943, at St. John's Lutheran Church. They moved to Wayne, where they farmed for a couple of years. In 1945 they moved back to the Columbus area, where they continued farming until retirement. For many years Heino sold Hoegemeyer Seed.

    He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where he served as secretary and trustee for several years. He was a charter member of the St. John's Lutheran Laymen League and a member of the American Legion Pieper Post No. 306 in Creston. Heino enjoyed fishing, playing cards, and welding.

    Survivors include sons, Merlin (Nancy) Siefken of West Des Moines, Iowa, Harlen Siefken of Homosassa, Fla., Fred (Kathy) Siefken of Columbus; daughter-in-law, JoAnn Johnson of Lincoln; grandchildren, Steven (Krista) Siefken of Joliet, Ill., Shiela (Darby) Cain of Lincoln, Robin (Kevin) Lowman of Aurora, Colo., Jessica (Wes) Caddell of Freeport, Ill., Craig (Jennifer) Siefken of Lakeville, Minn., Ryan Siefken of Fremont, Heather (Eric) Hiner of St. Louis, Mo., Erin Siefken of Lincoln; 11 great-grandchildren, five stepgreat-grandchildren; brothers, Arnold (Lois) Siefken of Wayne, Emil (Betty) Siefken of Fort Collins, Colo.; sisters, Elna (Elmer) Janssen of Columbus, Lillian (Norbert) Wieting of Delmont, S.D.; sister-in-law, Helen Siefken of Norfolk.

    Heino was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Louise (Minnie) Siefken; his wife, Esther Siefken; son, Delbert Siefken; brother, Ernest Siefken; sister, Edna Adamson.
